THOUGHTS .......

In August Jamie of The Lighter Side began a Mid Year Resolution which I joined. I was so expectant of getting my act together and using this as one of my tools to inspire me to continued weight loss. At the time I wrote the following ....

My December 31st goal is to weigh 65 kg/143 pounds and that means weighing 23 kg/50 pounds less than I do now. That's a big ask at this stage of my game but I'm going to give it a good go.

The reality is my weight loss was virtually stalled for months and it's only this last week that I feel as though I am back on a roll. With only eight and a bit weeks to go I need to think more realistically.

It might be possible to lose another 7 or 8 kg this year. I need to modify my expectations to match what is possible. Just because this experiment has worked out well this last week does not mean it will be plain sailing for the next 8 weeks. There are trips away from home, there are many meals out, and there are Holidays. Christmas should be easy for us to manage but it's all the other things that go with the season which will challenge. Am I thinking too far ahead? I'm just trying to set an achievable goal to begin 2013 with. It looks as though I should be satisfied if I reach 80 kg/175 pounds for New Year. That's all I'm going to say about that right now. I'll adjust my tickers tomorrow after my official weigh in.

We have a lovely day and I should be outside so enough. I'm putting my laptop away till evening.

Close enough. The chicken broth was hard to get right. I could be too high or too low by as much as 100 calories and heaps of carbs. Homemade stuff isn't always easy to assess especially when you don't measure anything.

THOUGHTS .......

It's been a very long day or feels as though it has been.

We had an early lunch and hit the road. We were at the Clinic before 2 pm and finally finished by 4.15. I am now on the waiting list to have surgery to pull my lower eyelid tight so that it doesn't hang down. Hopefully the nerve will have healed and the Bells Palsy disappeared before my surgery date comes up next March. I am also being referred to a plastic surgeon. There are a few options to pull my face straight, and even the possibility of a nerve transplant. I'm not sure I will go as far as this surgery but a face lift could be a good idea after I've finished losing weight. *funny* I don't care enough and I have said for years no general anaesthetic unless it's a life or death situation.

It was so late when we left the hospital all the cafes were closed so we got a bottle of soft drink each, L & P for John and Bunderburg diet ginger ale for me, and headed home. We didn't feel much like doing any shopping and were glad to be on our way. We stopped in Whitianga and I gathered up some bits and pieces for tea which we shared with Jane. It was very tasty platter.

One thing that annoys is is the universal trend in New Zealand to close Cafe style coffee shops  about 4 pm for the day. As someone who lives out of town I have often looked for somewhere to relax for a few minutes before the drive home. There is a gap between 4 pm and 6 pm when the restaurants begin to open for the evening. It is only in the larger cities like Rotorua that you can find somewhere to sit and have a drink without going into a bar for alcohol. I understand the late afternoon is a slow traffic time and many of them open early for breakfast and need to prepare for the next day, but it still drives me nuts that this continues.

There was a lovely sunset but the light had faded too much for photographs by the time we got home.

I'll be going to bed soon.

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 26.5 kg/58 lbs

Welcome to my new readers.

THOUGHTS .......

The crazy maths continues.

I'm really am trying to work this out Deb. I guess I will keep tweaking things and weigh the results against general well being and weight loss.

According to Dr. Layman on Jimmy Moore's podcast one should eat 1.4 - 1.5 grams  protein per kilo of Ideal Body Weight. He concedes that people might want to eat according their ideal weight rather than current weight. He also talks about an optimal level of 90 grams per day divided into three equal meals but I'll do it my way for now.

If my weight target is somewhere around 59 kg/130 pounds, that suggests my daily intake of protein should be around 82 grams. It seems as awful lot when I am happily eating 46 grams per day currently. 83 grams of protein @4 calories per gram = 328 calories. This is meant to be less than 20% of my daily calories.

328 is 20% of 1640 calories. I can accept that many calories but I do not want to go to 20% protein.

328 is 16% of 2050 calories and that is too many foe me to consider right now especially as it also means a huge increase in fats.

Here's the breakdown .....

1640 calories
328 calories protein = 20% (82 gms)
1230 calories fats = 75%  (136 gms)
82 calories carbohydrates = 5% (16 gms)

My preferred ratio is a maximum of 16% of calories from protein and that makes things more difficult.

2050 calories
328 calories protein = 16% (82 gms)
1619 calories fats = 79% (179 gms)
102 calories carbohydrates = 5% (25 gms)

This is more calories than I am prepared to consume right now.

I have looked at these tables and decided to continue with what I am doing for few more days. That will give me time to decide what my optimal diet should be.

NB I am eating way more than 300 gm of food. These numbers represent pure nutrients not counting water, fibre and whatever. I am using a program called Perfect Diet Tracker.

Tomorrow is a good day out, maybe stressful. We are going to Thames as i have an appointment with the opthalmologist.

We spent a whole lot of time planning a trip away next week. John has an appointment at Waikato Hospital next Monday We'll spend Sunday night in or near Hamilton, four nights in New Plymouth and 2 nights in Rotorua. I am holing for good weather.

Eight calories were over my limit and the glass of red wine threw my ratios out by reducing the perfect proportion of fats. I'm really happy with theses results. Although it would have been sensible to eat my first meal of the day before 3.30 pm. Cream in my coffee is working like an appetite suppressant,

THOUGHTS .......

I really appreciate that Deb and Lorretta have checked out my "new" eating plan. It's helping me to keep my feet on the ground.

The good news is that I no longer need to be concerned about constipation which was always an issue when I went low carb and more so since I cut out wheat. That's a relief. *smile*

The bad news is I can't always eat all my calories in a day even though I chose the fairly low number of 1150.  That might be good news but only time will tell.

I don't want to go below 75% fats. I believe that the right fats, especially omega-3s will improve my skin. It might take 6 months to prove me right or wrong.

Cream in my morning coffee rocks. I really did not think I would enjoy this. It reminds of of when I first became a coffee drinker back in my youth. I was barely 20 years old and out on my own in the big city of New Plymouth. I had gained a position in the Radiography Department at the hospital where I was training to be a radiotherapy technician. My weekly treat was to go into the middle of Devon Street to the new and sophisticated coffee shop for lunch. I had an asparagus roll, a pink lamington and coffee with whipped cream. The whipped cream sat like a froth on top of the coffee and gave it an exotic and luxurious touch. Coffee shops were becoming the smart place to go replacing Tearooms. This was way back in 1959 and I guess my coffee with whipped cream was the forerunner of cappuccinos.

It seems slightly strange after all these years of low fat messages to be deliberately adding fat to my diet. I listened to a Jimmy Moore podcast this morning and, (I hope I got this right), his advice is to begin by increasing your fats and lowering your protein by 5% ,if you think your low carb diet needs changing. Nobody has to go radical all at once, as I have done, because we all have different levels of tolerance. I guess my own experience over time suggested that I could do this all in one hit. Now all I need to do is get the ratios and portions right.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be for people who have grown up with "Fat is Bad."  At least I had the knowledge of my grandparents and my own childhood and youth to convince me that fat is not as evil as the food gurus make out. Even so I've come a long way in the last few years. It's like turning my food world upside down. The funny thing is that upside down works. I had more physical energy yesterday than for quite a while. The scales are hinting I have lost more weight after months of struggling to get consistent weight loss again.

Prodding my belly no longer hurts ... well not as much as it used to. There are still a couple of tender spots but they seem to be healing by the day. One significant spot is at the base of my sternum and I relate that specifically to the top of my stomach. If this spot is less painful to being poked then the inflammation I have lived with for as long as I can remember is subsiding. I remember wanting to yell at the doctor and run for my life the first time I had my abdomen palpated. Of course I did neither of those things. I was stoical and bravely controlled my face. I never let on how painful it was. I was amazed when after 6 months of the low carb lifestyle the painful pressure points ceased to exist. That was about 5 years ago. Since then I have vacillated between low carb and eat-anything until this year. The tender spots returned and needless to say I'm relieved they are healing again.

When I was eating too much bread slathered with butter the area over my liver was tender and swollen. That went away after a month or two without wheat. I am keeping watch because it would be a shame to end up with an inflamed liver from eating too much fat. I was only 21 years old when my gall bladder was removed. We think it might be a genetic weakness as I'm not the only one who had this operation at about the same age. I understand that with no gall bladder the body may not metabolise fats properly but I don't seem to have any problems. In fact my health improved dramatically after the operation and I have never had any of the unpleasant symptoms some people seem to have following a cholecystectomy. I rarely even think about it but as I continue with this experiment I am aware of the need to stay alert for changes.

An experiment is underway. For an unspecified time I am endeavouring to follow the above guidelines. My greatest challenge is learning new serving sizes. It was easier today. It's very geeky doing all this measuring and calculating but it's amusing me right  now. I can see problems ahead when we eat out or are away from home. The idea is to feel at ease with this before we go away again.

THOUGHTS ........

Jimmy Moore, Livin La Vida, has posted an interesting, to me, article on CarbSmart about twelve of his favourite high fat foods.

Here is an excerpt.

"12. Liquid fish oil – 100% fat
And finally, I couldn’t talk about healthy fats without telling you about fish oil. While you won’t be adding this to your food, it is an important supplement to your diet, and will increase your blood ketones dramatically. I take two tablespoons of Carlson’s lemon-flavored liquid cod liver oil daily to infuse my body with healthy omega-3 fats as part of my heart-healthy regimen. There are fish oil capsules and tablets available at drug stores, but many of these tend to be rancid, and therefore counterproductive. That’s why I prefer the liquid fish oil. In case you’re worried about the “fishy” taste of this stuff in your mouth, it’s actually a delightfully pleasant “lemony” taste. I couldn’t imagine going through my day without taking my liquid fish oil, and the resulting blood ketone levels make it worth it!"

I can see how taking this oil would be beneficial especially to my skin and recovery from Bells Palsy but right now the idea of swallowing oil neat makes me shudder. I grew up in the generation of people who were fed cod-liver oil. We took it in a proprietary brand called Lanes Emulsion*. I remember liking it as a child but when I thought I'd try it out when my own children were young I gaggged. I wonder if there is something bearable and equivalent tastiness to Jimmy Moore's favourite oil here in New Zealand.

I can't believe I'm even considering this but I looked up cod liver oil on line and found this one available in NZ
Nordic Naturals Arctic D Cod liver Oil Lemon Liquid 237ml
Regular Price: NZD $54.90
Our Price: NZD $43.90

I also found a possible supplier of Carlsons. If you take 2 tablespoons per day, is that 30 ml? I would find that rather expensive as I would need to buy a bottle every week. I have been thinking about a good oil supplement for a while as I know it could be beneficial to promoting nerve healing in regard to the Bells Palsy. So I'm not discounting the possibility of trying this out. I do supplement with Kril oil capsules but this might be another tool towards improving my health. I really am getting weird!!!!!!

Today I'm trying to build my fat % by having cream in my coffee. It was palatable without sugar but I still prefer my coffee black. Edit .... I never once wanted food after my morning coffee and cream. See Brunch notes.

Lane's Emulsion

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lane's Emulsion was a patent medicine manufactured in New Zealand.
The emulsion, which had a strong fishy smell owing to its high cod liver oil content, was invented by Edward Lane,[1] a chemist from Oamaru, in 1898, and was later manufactured in the town's Harbour Street (now part of the Oamaru Historic Precinct) in a building which still bears the product's slogan "It's famous because it's good". The original recipe contained cod liver oil, beechwood creosote, mineral lime, soda, brandy, vitamins, fresh egg yolk and some secret ingredients.[2]
Sold in clear glass bottles, the thick cream-coloured liquid was fed to generations of New Zealand children and was also sold overseas. Originally claiming to be "a reliable remedy for pulmonary ailments", the product was still in production until the early 1980s. Oamaru company Crombie and Price, which bought Lane's Medicine in 1971, still holds the rights and recipe to the product.

Welcome to my new readers.

THOUGHTS .......

More fiddling with nutrients today. I think I've got rid of at least 1 pound this week so that's a start. Official weight loss numbers on Wednesday at the beginning of November. Wow! So close to the end of the year. I'm thinking about pulling out Mum's traditional Christmas pudding recipe which is very rich. It has a lot of dried fruit and nuts some flour which I will change to almond and coconut flour and lots of butter. It is a bit of a sugar hit so special occasion food only. I'll probably make it sometime in the next two weeks and for once it will have time to mature before Christmas. That would be a first for me. I seem to always leave things like this to the last possible moment. It's a bit of a mission to make them since instead of a couple of large puddings I make little ones in glazed flower pots, boiling them for ages, four at a time. It takes at least 3 days to complete the cooking the mixture but they make lovely gifts and can be eaten in a single serving although it's probably wiser to split and share since they are roughly twice the size of a regular muffin.

I want to stay around 1150 calories so this is how my breakdown of macro-nutrients should look like. This is what I am aiming for today. It's a long time since I went to school and arithmetic was never my strong point so if anyone wants to work this out and finds I've got it wrong please tell me.

This looks like a safe enough LCHF ratio to me and I think the protein level is high enough for now. I hope I don't have to do this tweaking and measuring for much longer. I gave up any thoughts of WW because of the measuring and counting and here I am deeply into the counting scene. All I can say in defence is that's it's for a good purpose. If this works for me I will be a happy chappie once more.

I am so scatter brained. The day after leaving Rotorua I realised I'd left a skirt in the hotel wardrobe so called them and sent a self addressed courier bag. Not only had I left a skirt behind but I was surprised to find my petticoat and a fuschia jacket in the packet.

Back at home I was unpacking when I realised I do not have all the jewellery I thought I had with me. I put my thinking cap on and was almost too scared to tell John because the missing stuff is quite valuable, not to mention sentimental. It was a huge relief when our son phoned last night and confirmed that I had left the sapphire ring at their place back in September. I had placed the box on a dark shelf under the bedside table in their guest room. We bought it on our first trip to USA back in 2005 and it is the only expensive piece of jewellery we have purchased. My engagement and wedding rings are comparatively modest. Apart from the fact that it's a pretty ring John is very proud that he has bought me one piece of good jewellery.

The other box remains a mystery. It holds a gold and opal bracelet, brooch and earrings that Mum left me. I'm wondering if I took them with me on our last trip and hoping I left them at the first place we stayed which is my friend, Julie's. We did check the flat before we left but maybe I put the box somewhere not so obvious. I'm almost certain I did not have them with me in Rotorua but now my mind is playing tricks. Perhaps I can ask John to take me to Pauanui on Sunday and I can go to church and check up with Julie. I hate to think they may have gone missing from our hotel room. Surely I wasn't that careless. Edit .. The opals were in a box in my drawer. I hadn't looked there because I thought I knew what was in that particular box.

As an aside. John went to church with me at Pauanui and that is the second time this year, third time in 14 months. Maybe he is softening.

I am tired of being scatterbrained. I have a really good mind but details get pushed aside never to be recalled. One of my biggest faults is tidying things away and forgetting where the tidy place is. I want to get another mosaic project out. The one I really want to do is missing. A foot wide sun and several bags of tiles and glue and grout. Where did it go? So frustrating. I'd set my mind on doing it and now I'll have to do the butterfly. Maybe I need to go through the house and bus and do the spring clean and sorting out which is so badly needed. But I'll make the butterfly first.

HOW DID I DO? .......

It was good to get 35 minutes on the cross-trainer without feeling that I had over-done things

Breakfast:- Omelet with bacon, spinach, cherry tomato, cream, olive oil, butter and coconut oil. Big breakfast for me but it was 10.30am so more like brunch and I'd already achieved 35 minutes on the cross-trainer.

Dinner:- Stir-fry chicken, cabbage and cauliflower in coconut oil and butter with thyme, fresh ground pepper and sea salt.

Snacks:- 1/4 wedge camembert and almonds. I've been snacking on almonds when I go to bed. Last night I really did not want them so much. I could have done with them mid afternoon when I ate the camembert and some of the almonds I had allocated for the day. Perhaps it is time to give up the bedtime snacking.

Welcome to my new readers.

THOUGHTS .......

A comment from Deb had me rethinking my target calories and protein. I was so busy trying to get ratios correct I never thought that my overall protein grams had dropped below optimum level for good health. I'm not sure whether I have it right yet but it does feel a little more comfortable.

I was cold yesterday and last night. There was a chill in the air because we keep getting these cols south winds. I don't like hot weather but I'm more than ready for warmer temperatures.

We went shopping and had lunch in town. I wasn't really hungry and did not need the salad. John ate half of mine. I ran into a problem tonight. I bought a piece of pork belly to roast for dinner. Whoa! That's high in calories. Then I looked and saw Spark People counted it as being equal in fat and protein. It was the leanest piece of pork belly ever, so I fiddled with my calculations but it really is a guestimate. I decided to have a piece of dark chocolate and that took my calculation over the calorie limit but not too seriously. I remain uncertain about this trial. I thought my belly was swollen today. Maybe I am eating too much fat but it's too soon to say it's not right for me.

HOW DID I DO? .......

My calculations show that my ratios are a bit out but not worried about that today.

CONTINUING TO LEARN A NEW TO ME VERSION OF LOW CARB HIGH FAT DIET

NEW SEASON MAPLE LEAVES

299 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 26.5 kg/58 lbs

Welcome to my new readers.

It's never too late to change your life for better.

THOUGHTS .......

I want to thank Deb for your comment on yesterday's post. I went back into the Spark People Diet Tracker and adjusted my goals. I am aiming for 1050 calories since this feels more comfortable .... I think. Not sure why I have a "Free Trial" to test for 6 days but when it ends I'll use the free one.

I've set my goals thus Fats = 80%
Proteins = 14%
Carbs = 6%

I know this looks unbalanced but I am experimenting with LCHF and very moderate protein because eating too much protein can stall weight loss. Excess protein is converted to blood sugars triggering insulin production which is to be avoided for weight loss. My biggest challenge is to keep the fats high. I have no idea how people manage this. Eating this way is supposed to stimulate your body to become a better fat burner. At this stage I'm not doing much in the way of regular exercise. If this eating plan works the way it should I'll be longing to get moving as I get into it and blood ketones increase.

I decided to begin the day with higher than normal fats. Well that didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. I've read somewhere about Fat Bombs. Hmmm! Do I want to be that radical? I enjoy natural fat in foods but adding fat goes against the grain in more ways than one.

Breakfast was close to goal. I need to aim for something similar at lunch if I'm hungry. Perhaps an herb omelet drizzled with lots of olive oil. I never thought I would consider eating like this. I tend to watch quite a few cooking shows and I would shudder as Jamie Oliver and other chefs talked about a drizzle olive oil over a dish to finish it off and then proceed to pour on what looked like a bucketful. Recently I found that this was not disgusting to my taste. I use an organic extra virgin from the SuperMarket. It's not the best or most expensive brand but it does. One day when my budget feels generous I'll go looking for a tasty boutique producer of olive oil. I remember years ago being served a small basket of artisan bread with the most delicious oil for dipping. I was right out of my comfort zone but the memory prepared me for this current trial.

I hope this trial bears good results for both my weight and skin.

Our Rotorua son phoned for a chat this morning. He is learning to be wheat free but has found he smokes more. Reading the book Wheat Belly is helping him to understand the brain/chemical aspect of addiction. What impressed me most was that his decision is based on the fact that both John and I have lost weight and look good ... ie. better than before. Greg has a determined spirit so I have high hopes for his success although the antidepressant he is on could make it more difficult to lose weight. My hope is that he will persist long enough to be able trial going off his ant-depressant medication. He has a lot of medical support but going wheat free will stay under the radar until he has made a significant difference to his weight. His advisors want him to do WW but it was too complicated for him. He doesn't want to be counting points all the time. I believe he might be eligible for some kind of financial support to attend a gym. If this is so I will encourage him when the time seems right.

I am thanking God for this breakthrough in Greg's life.

Fats = 80.2%
Proteins = 14%
Carbs = 5.8%
Total calories for day = 5 under target, That means I'm on the button today but it wasn't without some weirdness.

I've been incredibly lazy. In fact I feel as though it's been a wasted day. I thought a lot about getting out one of my mosaic projects and then I couldn't find it. Is it here at home, but tidied away too well. Or did I take it to Christchurch to work on with our daughter-in-law? I can't find a couple of pieces of jewellery either. I almost certain I left them in Christchurch but it's unsettling. I also left some clothes in the hotel wardrobe in Rotorua. I remembered them in the middle of the night before we packed and departed and not again until the following day. I phoned the hotel and was advised to send a self addressed courier bag which was delivered today. I've always been a bit scatter brained and John makes the most of being able to let me know he is smarter than me. He's not but I'll leave him with his assumptions.

I was surprised to feel a little wobbly for a few minutes this afternoon. It felt as though my blood sugar had dropped too low but otherwise I feel fine and will give this another go tomorrow.

HOW DID I DO? .......

Struggling to keep the balance between protein and fats. I had to reduce my serving of chicken by half to achieve today's percentages.

I'm very pleased that I hit my target ratio of macro-nutrients and stayed within my selected calorie limit.  I did feel a little hungry at times but it was soon out of mind. I remain undecided about how long I can eat this way and how long I will need to measure and track to stay within guidelines.

Breakfast:- Bubble and squeak with bacon and egg

Lunch: 2 egg herb omelet cooked in coconut oil and dressed with olive oil. Very tasty and I hope satisfying.

Nutritional Ketosis My Way

135 gm Fat (79%)
54 gm Protein (14%)
27gm Carbs (7%)
Daily Calorie Target 1280

THOUGHTS .....

This morning I downloaded the food calculator on Spark People. It wasn't too happy with some of my selections and I am definitely out of step with their nutritional recommendations but now I can see how my "normal" food choices stack up against their nutritional guidelines. I wanted to see how close my meals are to a nutritional ketogenic diet. I don't have a ketone monitor but I've been low carb off and on for years and using ketostix for urine analysis for long enough to have some indication of how my body responds.

I was pleased to see that I am very close to my target, or I was until I added in the three strawberries I picked and ate when I first got up. The ratio of fats, protein and carbohydrates follows.

Today's 331 calorie breakfast.
Fats = 65%
Proteins = 22.6%
Carbohydrates = 12.4%.
Lunch/snack  = 238 cal
Fats = 72.8%...................Day's total = 68.3%
Proteins = 25.5%..................................23.8%
Carbs = 1.7%......,..................................7.9%
Dinner = 267 cal
Fats = 30%............................................56%
Proteins = 53%......................................34%
Carbs = 17%..........................................11%
Snacks and Drinks = 304 cal
Fats = 64%..................................Final totals for today.....58%
Proteins = 9%................................ ...................................26%
Carbs = 27 %................................. ...................................16%
Total calories for day = 1144 which Spark People says is 134 cals too low.

It was a bit of a shock to discover that my carbohydrate target of less than 7% per meal involves making choices which are very close to Zero Carbs. I'm not sure whether I can sustain such a low carbohydrate level. I think my body will like me if I do but I will  miss some of my favourite foods. Three sundried tomatoes and three strawberries is close to twice my carb limit. Yikes!! I love vegetables so maybe for the 6 day free trial on Spark People I will find myself eating nothing except spinach. It will be interesting to see how this works out in practice. I can see lots of tweaking along the way and even the possibility of abandoning Nutritional Ketogenic Diet.

I am getting a little desperate to continue losing weight and I do have a good tolerance to fats and a poor tolerance of carbohydrates so it's worth doing a trial. I am also fed up with my skin problems which seem to be caused by candida yeasts. The best way to deal with this is dietary. My doctor doesn't get the problem so is unlikely to prescribe anything helpful. I know that anything that converts to  blood sugar is unhelpful so maybe Nutritional Ketosis, or in other words very low carbohydrates and moderate protein will make a difference.

The biggest problem with eating this way is when we are away from home. I will work that out as we go along. You can be sure that I will not be weighing, measuring and counting calories any more days than it takes me to understand serving sizes. I am allergic to living with this stuff filling my head. *haha, hehe*

REPORTING BACK .......

It has become clear that I'm eating way too much protein and not enough fat. Increasing my fats is going to be quite a challenge unless I learn to drink shots of olive oil or suck on teaspoons of coconut oil and I can't see that happening. Otherwise it's a fun kind of experiment.

HOW DID I DO? .......

I was getting tired by dinner time and could not be bothered making an effort to adjust the balance of nutrients. I am amazed by how much fat it takes to reach optimum levels. Not at all sure whether I will continue this for more than a few days.

Breakfast:- Two egg omelet cooked in 1 teaspoon coconut oil, with 3 sundried tomatoes in oil and grated cheddar cheese.

QUIET MONDAY WARNING MANY PHOTOS

VISITOR CENTRE ROTORUA

296 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 26.5 kg/58 lbs

Welcome to my new readers.

It's never too late to change your life for better.

THOUGHTS .......

I'm back on board. Our time away was tiring but a good change and I feel better for the break. We continue to have not very good weather with too much wind and some rain. There have been a few lovely sunny calm days but this spring is generally awful. I reckon I can count the number of sunny days in the last 4 to 5 months on my two hands, no feet.

My garden is at least 3 weeks behind where I wanted it to be. I had hoped to be picking tomatoes by New year but the plants are so small it will probably be late February. I need a green house. On the other hand we got it right with the strawberries and are picking one or two everyday with the promise of a decent crop to come. I do wonder why I bother with growing vegetables.

We could be away for at least two weeks in November between cat sitting so Jane, (daughter), can take a holiday and visiting friends in New Plymouth. We will be away 2 weeks in December and this pattern will continue for most of next year except we are talking about a trip overseas which would be at least 6 weeks if not 3 months. We can stay away from NZ for 6 months at a time without compromising our superannuation but I doubt if we can afford to travel for such a long period.

Hopefully we will be able to firm up some of our ideas in the next couple of weeks. I think it's time to make a tentative itinerary for our next foray into North America. Dreams are free our mortgage is not.

I am the exact same weight as when the month began. Is that good? It depends on your point of view. I am pleased that a week away eating what was convenient rather than within our normal routine meant no weight gain. I am unhappy that my weight loss has slowed down to a stall. I can do something about this. I can be a little stricter about not eating any starches. I can watch out for high calorie foods and be more cautious. I can try the ratio that many are finding keeps them in a nutritional ketogenic state.
It would look something like this ......
135 gm fat (79%)
54 gm protein (14%)
27 gm carbs (7%)

It looks good but I'm not sure how to work out the serving sizes to achieve this without hours of messing around. I want to keep it simple with no counting or measuring once I've worked it out. If anyone reading this has some good tips on working out a meal plan along the above lines please leave a comment.

Rotorua.....

We stayed in a four star hotel in Rotorua and it was only OK. There was nothing special about it although I did enjoy a swim in the heated pool one morning and we made use of the spa one night before going to bed. The Kingsgate qualifies as a tourist trap and the restaurant was too expensive for us. Breakfast at $20 each and dinner for $35 each was more than twice as much as we aim for. We missed being able to prepare our normal breakfast as there was no microwave and only a jug to boil water for hot drinks and a small fridge. We managed but it seemed awkward. We bought some yoghurt and a packet of Hubbards gluten free cereal which satisfied but was far too sweet. We ended up having restaurant style lunches which were not cheap. I guess we spent three or four times as much as we normally would on food but we did enjoy our meals. Dinners were at our son's house and he cooked so that was good. He has been wheat free for nearly a week. I did the generous Mummy thing and bought him a stack of groceries to help him along the way.

Rotorua has a reputation for beautiful civic gardens. I guess the volcanic soil helps. I managed to get some photos of and was delighted to capture the colour co-ordinated tulips with other spring flowers.

Our visit with my friend from primary school days went well. It was lovely to catch up. We haven't stayed in their house before as the last time we stayed overnight we had the bus. They run a B&B and Jill has an immaculate home full of interesting things. In my hands it would be a clutter, in Jill's hands it was delightful. How come some people have a knack of displaying things and others do not? I have gone for minimalist because anything more always looks a mess. Jill's garden looks pretty good too, not a weed in sight.
