TOO MANY CHALLENGES - PROBABLE WEIGHT GAIN FOR JULY

SUMMER FLOWERS IN ALASKA JULY 2009

I needed to get as far away from home as I could. Our grey, wet winter is getting to me.

213 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

I've been struggling for a while. It's a combination of things. Winter blues or should I say greys. We are getting more than our normal share of cool weather. There was a lovely sunrise today, more silvery that golden certainly but we did see some sun. This afternoon it turned grey and cold again and more rain. So that's one challenge.

Family stuff and dealing with my emotional reactions. Hospital trips and other medical stuff is an added nuisance. My twisted face and problem eye all caused by Bells Palsy are getting to me. I'm beginning to lose hope of recovery and that thought is depressing. So lump all those things together as challenge number 2.

Challenges one and two mean that outside walking is not attractive. Add in low energy and being away from home so much and I've become too attached to the couch. Getting regular exercise is challenge number three.

The last couple of months I've been learning more and more about nutrition and listening to the paleo and low carb people. I've managed to confuse my eating and exercise plan. I've added in foods without limiting quantity. Challenge number four is dealing with new knowledge and using it wisely.

I want Comfort Food. It's winter time for goodness sake! How do you manage to eat green salads and smoothies made with frozen berries on cold miserable days? I call that challenge number five.

That's too many challenges. The best way to go is not think about them and start each day as though it is going to be my best ever.

I am also going to try and put all the stuff I've been learning on the back burner and get back to the basics of counting carb grams again. I won't do it to perfection because I will estimate rather than weigh everything. I've been doing this long enough that I am fairly good at judging my portions. Recording my carb grams in each meal will help to get me back on the winning side again. I need to become more active than I've been over the last 6 weeks too.

Yesterday I picked up an interesting thought. One which helped me settle my mind about exercise. I count any movement as exercise but the "experts" would call what I do activity and going to the gym or weights at home and so forth as exercise. This same person said something about active people can lose and maintain weight just as past generations did. He called the 10,000 steps a day goal activity, just as gardening, housework, and shopping etc are.

Truth is I've become inactive. This is extremely unhealthy. I'm altering the title of this Blog to match my new understanding. Hopefully August will prove to be a more successful month. My official weigh in will be late since we are staying on here at Mum's for a few more days.

Reporting back............

I woke up about 2.30 am and couldn't sleep so got up and turned the heater on. I was still there, tucked up with a rug around my legs, when John got up this morning so I had an afternoon sleep. Tonight I'm going to watch Mark Todd in the show jumping before I go to bed. He's one of the last riders so it might be a long night.

212 DAYS JULY 30TH

ROBBING THE BEACH TO BUILD A FALSE DUNE

212 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

We drew the curtains this morning  to a calm, fine and misty morning. But ... our neighbours collection of dinghies and canoes were scattered along 200m/yards of the beach. Some building materials were scattered over our lawn. Fortunately it was light stuff so no damage done by flying debris. John went out earlier in the day and picked up our outdoor furniture and putting it in a safer sheltered place.

The grey seas are rolling in right up to the bottom of our section at high tide. We are mean. We want to see a tide high enough with waves pushed in by the wind so that it attacks the false dune in front of the next door build. It's going to happen one day but this was not the day.

Reporting back............

It's lovely to have Jane home. We viewed her photos as a slide show on the TV. We enjoyed watching more of the Olympics. We admired the beauty of synchronised diving, held our breath as the gymnasts did flips on the bar, cheered New Zealand swimmers, and bounced up and down with joy when the Black Sticks, (Women's Hockey), beat the Aussies.

We watched Mark Todd with pride and pleasure as he and his beautiful horse went through the dressage. Mark Todd is now 56 years old and riding what had been his second string horse, Campino, which he has been training up for these Olympics. He has two Olympic Gold medals in three day eventing and many other awards and trophies. His first Olympics were in Los Angeles in 1984 where he won his first gold medal on Charisma.

I love this quote from one of his recent interviews.

“Luckily for me, riding is one of the few sports where age – and the experience that goes with it – is an advantage,” he says.

Age is an advantage! Who Knew?

How did I do?

Thoughts for the day..........

Pulling back from yesterday's poor choices

Reporting back............

After 11 pm - Waiting for Jane. She's driving home from Auckland Airport and it's stormy this side of the Coromandel Range. We are experiencing strong gusts of wind that shake the house. I'm finding it alarming at times even though I know we are perfectly safe. I'm not happy about her driving home alone on this dark and stormy night but she'll be here in about half an hour. I'm glad she has called us a couple of times along the way to let us know where she is. They left for the Airport in Bali about 14 hours ago so it hasn't been an over-long day.

Nearly 1 am. Jane is home safely thank-goodness because the wind is awful. Now we're just catching up and having a good chat while the Olympics continue. Saw Zara Phillips doing the dressage part of the competition. She looked so elegant.

How did I do?

I've still got a way to go to eating properly but today was definitely an improvement on yesterday.

MY WORST EATING DAY IN A LONG TIME

GERANIUM HIDING BEHIND THE DAFFODIL IN YESTERDAY'S PHOTO

210 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

2 DAYS OUT OF 31  EXERCISING

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

Jane fllies home from Bali tomorrow and we expect her to arrive home in the early morning hours of Monday. Our time here is nearly over but we will possibly stay on for another few days before going home.

We spent the whole morning watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Loved every minute of it.

I know the Olympics inspire many young people to dream and work toward their own Gold Medal.  There has been some discussion about how it stimulates an interest in sport and encourages many people to become more active. I don't know about that. For the next sixteen days TV time will double and triple in our house.

I finally chopped the veggies for soup last night. A couple of days ago we had the meat of a bacon hock which had been cooked in the Slow Cooker. I added pickling spices, honey, dash of cider vinegar, quartered apple, large onion and a couple of carrots to cook the hocks. Last night I scooped out the over-cooked veggies and apple from the liquid and began adding diced carrot, parsnip, kumera, (sweet potato), celery and pumpkin, diced lightly caramelised onion and let it simmer away for a few hours. A taste test nearly blew my head off. The pickling spice had a bit of dried chilli in it and the heat was Wowee! Too much heat for me and all I could do was hope it would mellow with time. Normally I would have stained the liquor. It's a very tasty soup but I'm trying it for lunch with some trepidation.

Reporting back............

The soup is yummy but it does catch in my throat every now and then.

How did I do?

A bad eating day. Not sure what is going on my me head is just not in the right place. I didn't record properly but my food consisted of 2 slices of gluten free toast, omelet, bacon, cheese, soup, chocolate, almonds, potato and kumera mash,  pork roasted onion and apple in white wine, lots of crackling, glass of wine, 2 large dishes of icecream and possibly more that I've forgotten.

I seem to be on a fast boat to undermining my weight loss. It's a worry. Add to that no exercise feeling cold half of the time and any other excuses you like to add in.

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

Reporting back............

We had a lovely sunny day. What a change. Time to do some laundry and since I never wash my whites at Mum's we took a drive and went home. Despite filters at Mum's house the water tends to be coloured with organic matter from the stream in the hill. We are on a private water from a dam on a nearby farm. The recent rain has turned our water quite brown from the soil and bush. We did our four loads of washing and pottered around checking things out before coming back to Mum's for lunch. Later we did our grocery shopping and I have a huge pot of soup in the slow cooker using the liquid from a bacon hock.

How did I do?

Fine but too tired to complete this post last night.

I'M GLAD THE DAY IS OVER

ANOTHER REMINDER OF THE BEACH WHEN THE SUN SHINES

207 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

2 DAYS OUT OF 31  EXERCISING

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

Further to yesterday's post I cannot for the life of me understand people who get stuck in a mind-set. Learning is fun. I love stretching my brain. Sometimes it takes you to places you may not want to go but it's always possible to pull back from something and agree to disagree.

I've done this with my sister's beliefs. I accept that she believes what she does but I'll never follow her. I guess it's a little different because we're talking spiritual belief. I believe I understand to some degree where she is coming from and some of it borders on insanity. I no longer argue with her or try to prove her wrong. Either she will come to her senses or I am wrong.

When it comes to things like nutrician and metabolism the story is a little different. There is a wealth of scientific study backed up with research and anecdotal experience. Science is knowledge and has been around since time began, truth building on truth.

Not one of us are free from becoming closed to growing knowledge. We all feel more comfortable with traditional thinking and are threatened by anything new.

Nearly 40 years ago I went to a doctor who put me on a stone age diet. I think I was supposed to follow up with testing for food intolerances and allergies. How I wish I had understood more and followed through. At the time it all seemed a bit airy-fairy and I struggled with the diet. I will excuse myself by saying that I was a busy mother with 4 children aged 13, 11, 7 and 2 years old. I told my   regular doctor about this and he told me the doctor who was helping me was a charlaton. Try as I might this coloured my attitude. We were all learning. It's taken me till now to understand where this doctor coming from. There was no internet back then. The internet can lead us up the garden path. It can also open our minds.

Loretta left a comment yesterday that puts what I'm saying so badly in a quote by Tolstoy.

Yep... diet is a touchy topic. I remember years ago being told the wrong stuff, and paying the price now healthwise for following it. Yet when I first started hearing "no sugar, no flour" is the answer, boy I didn't want to hear it either! Hey, they were trying to take my "fix" away!!

Well, I recently had a weird comment at my blog, and I gave them this quote from Tolstoy...He said: "I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives."

Tolstoy must've known some vegetarians...

Reporting back............

I've had a weird day. No excuse. I stayed in bed till early afternoon, reading, neither eating nor drinking. About 2 pm I put together some lunch with left-overs. I realised later, around tea-time, I'd had nothing to drink. How weird is that? Since than I've eaten an apple and some cheese and had a couple of drinks. Our daughter-in-law spent today in hospital. She's home tonight. The baby had died 4 weeks ago. I'm glad she didn't have to stay in any longer. We rang a florist in Christchurch and arranged for a bouquet made up with some of her favourite colours to be delivered.

I hate it that we are so far away from them. I am exceedingly grateful for phones, and being able to text. I doubt if Amanda wanted to talk to me today but we did send a few texts.

We had a long chat a few days ago and Amanda told me the Midwives are starting to keep personal records of the pregnancies that are not running to full term in Christchurch. They don't know whether it's just one of those things or not but they are obviously concerned by the number of their mothers whose babies are dying in the early stages of pregnancy. There is some discussion about whether this is another aspect of the aftermath of the earthquakes.

No-one wants to talk about physical health risks associated with the earthquakes although a lot has been said about Post Trauma Stress. I'm sure there are many opportunities for all kinds of research. The long or even short term effects of living in a cloud of fine liquifaction dust will no doubt be evaluated in time. We have been in Christchurch when the cloud of dust hangs over the eastern suburbs causing a permanent haze.

The formatting has gone bananas again. So frustrating.

Thoughts for the day..........

Another fasting blood test this morning. No big deal. The Neurologist I saw last week said he didn't want to see me again but he wanted a blood check done for the record. Got that out or the way and had Brunch.

For the first time ever I decided to make a controversial comment on another Blog about diet. The writer of the Blog had read The China Study which alleges that carbohydrates are safer than animal products. I suppose I should write more about it here but I believe the research The China Study is based on is dodgy. I suggested that before people commit to following the China Study they look at other work including that of Tom Naughton and Dr. William Davis. I first began  my current understanding and quest for more knowledge by reading Tom Naughton's Blog and the book Wheat Belly. I've read and learned so much about the way the body makes insulin, stores fat and how cholesterol is made by our own liver.

I now understand how carbohydrates increase insulin and eventually cause insulin resistance. I know that insulin is the guilty party in fat storage and animal fats are not the great enemy we've been lead to believe. There is a wealth of science out there explaining metabolism and how we can improve our metabolism. Many highly qualified and well respected scientists are willing to stand up against the common ideas and do research that for me at least has the ring of truth.I know diet can be a very touchy subject and most people like to think they are experts and hate to have their own ideas questioned. But I took a risk because I hate seeing people demonising what to me is a very natural diet. Meat, fish, vegetables and some fruit, nuts and maybe cereals.

I went back to my comment on that Blog a little while later and was so disappointed to see the comment following mine. I'll paraphrase it.

The writer suggested, quite wisely, that the funding source of any research should be checked then went on to say the Dairy and Beef Council spend a lot of money with the intent of influencing what we eat. She believes The China Study is trustworthy science. This writer believes a diet based on plants is best.

What about the grain lobby and what about the people who sold us on highly processed grain and seed oils and fructose syrup from corn?

I think most people have been led up the garden path and now have closed minds to the food we were given in the beginning. I guess this is an age old argument and no-one is going to win.

It seems that the best way is to read as much as you can and experiment on yourself until you find what works for you.

Personally I prefer to eat things that have not been manufactured or processed to death. I like meat and will not be budged from eating it at least five times a week. I like my vegetables too and rarely have a meal without some vegetable or other.

I wish I'd never written my comment but it's done and people can discuss it as they will.

I guess that's one reason I'm happy to Blog away here and enjoy the comments I get and the communication I have between Internet friends. I can keep a low profile and because it's my Blog I can say what I like and other people's opinions are interesting but not so threatening. I appreciate my followers and am glad the numbers are small and friendly.

Thoughts for the day..........

Another day fit only for reading, watching TV and Blogging except I have nothing to write about.

We are ticking along not doing anything. I guess that's one of the advantages of retirement. We can do nothing and not feel guilty for being lazy.

I've done so little exercise for 5 weeks it's embarrassing. I need a fresh approach. A kindly plan of gentle exercise before my body gives out completely is on my agenda. The winter weather has put a real damper on my enthusiasm. there is water everywhere and we still have a storm watch or warning going out. How wet can it get?

STILL RAINING

YELOOW PANSIES BRIGHTEN A DULL DAY

204 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

2 DAYS OUT OF 31  EXERCISING

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

I really appreciate the comforting comments left for me yesterday. We spoke to our son today and they are doing as well as they can. We have flights booked to go to Christchurch from September 13 to 25th. I have a feeling we might be going in August as well. We'll make a decision about that after Jane comes home next weekend. Our friends at Otama have someone else to look after their dog and two cats. I'm glad about that because we weren't really looking forward to staying there this year. The house can be cold at this time of the year. It is built on the side of a steep hill and has too many steps and stairs.

We had noisy weather last night and most of today. This afternoon it cleared up a bit and now it's pouring with rain, the sea is roaring and there's a bit of wind. I didn't feel like going out so no church.

Reporting back............

Our tea tonight was delicious but I can't guarantee I can make it ever again. I put together two things which were not quite right. I had a cabbage that needed cooking so chopped it up and cooked it more or less according to my Flavoursome Cabbage recipe. I had two chicken breasts in the freezer which I got out yesterday but when I went to cook tea they were so big I only used one. I decided to marinate the other one and made up a marinade of lemon zest, lemon juice, grated ginger, 1/2 teaspoon honey, olive oil and freshly ground pepper. I cut the chicken into fairly large chunks and put it with the marinade in a sealed bag in the fridge. I tipped the whole lot into a small pan. When the chicken was cooked I added 3 or 4 ladles of cooked cabbage mixture and a bit cream. I had no idea whether it was a concoction that would work or not. We both went back for seconds. Fortunately it wasn't a huge recipe otherwise we might have been greedy. It was a little sweet and sour with a good hint of ginger.

I'm quite sure it had more carbs than are good for me but it was tasty and healthy whole food. I'm considering following the Thirty Day Meal Plan in Rob Wolf''s The Paleo Solution, The Original Human Diet. The only thing is, can I do it properly if we end up going to Christchurch in the next month? I think I can start tomorrow although again I'll probably do my own thing regarding breakfast. We'll see. I need to think it over a little more.

How did I do?

Another nice lazy day with lots of time for reading and studying Rob Wolf's book.

Thoughts for the day..........

Yesterday turned sour. We are coping with the latest family news and we're so very sad and heartbroken for our son and his wife. They went for their baby scan and there is no heartbeat. I haven't spoken to them yet as they needed time together to deal with this. We are all devastated and I know it's wrong but I'm questioning the goodness of God.

While we were in the car on Tuesday I had a lovely time talking in my heart with God and had a beautiful sense of His pleasure towards us. Then this.

Of course I cannot turn from my faith but it's a shock and a disappointment in a long line of big ones. I know it is not unusual to lose a baby, especially the first one, and they could easily be expecting again in another few months but this is a terrible blow and another grief to bear. Their joy was wonderful to see. They've been married more than 10 years and had delayed starting their family for a variety of reasons including the devastating Christchurch Earthquakes. This baby brought us all hope for the future. I know our hope is in God but it seemed that at long last our family was turning a corner.

There is nothing like the joy of a first baby and now it's gone.

I keep praying the scan was wrong. One hears of  miracles. Could this be ours? Faith or wishful thinking?

Times like this it's hard not to cry out, "Why us God."

I am struggling to turn away from the negative and look to God for comfort. It's as though my head and my heart are overtaken and encompassed by a huge balloon of grief for our son and his wife and their first baby, our first grandchild. Life is not fair.

Thoughts for the day..........

Mum's house is cold. Today we will go home and get our gas heater. I have the electric heater going but it doesn't make enough difference and my eye is bothering me. In fact it is so painful I have taken paracetamol. When my eye is hurting I feel miserable all over. Sorry about moaning but that's the truth. I'm struggling with my normal breakfast. It is too chilly to really enjoy my berry smoothie which I make with a handful of frozen berries, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1/2 cup water, 1 scoop whey protein powder and heaped dessert spoon of Greek yoghurt. I think I'll have a cheese omelet.

Currently I feel bloated. I can't see any particular reason but I think it's time to cut out all bacon, (processed meats), potato, (starches), and make sure I eat some leafy veggies everyday. In paticular I'm not eating leafy green salads with my main meals. They just don't go well in this cooler weather but I think my body needs them. It's not back to the drawing board but time to pull out the way I was eating earlier this year. The seemingly small changes count. Although my food is healthy whole foods, not everything I eat is helpful.

Reporting back............

Did I write that my sister came back yesterday for another visit? I hoped she would stay for a while and maybe we could go through the house deciding what to do about things. I would have liked to have some quality time with her, just hanging out being sisters. But .... she is on a mission. She believes she has this special task to inform others and hopefully convert them to her beliefs. Apparently she came up to give me some other stuff to read. I admitted I have not read the last book she gave me because it seemed like gobbeldy gook. I hope I didn't offend her too much but I had to tell her it didn't sit well with my own faith which is founded on the Bible. She would have known that before she even began to give me these things to read. She hasn't brought out this other stuff which she believes is so important for me to have so maybe she has given up on me. She's going home tomorrow. I enjoyed her company, so sad it's another brief visit.

Today was cloudy with a steely grey sky. We decided to pop home and get the gas heater so I suggested we all go and have lunch at our favoutite restaurant, Castle Rock Cafe. Lynn is vegetarian and John and I wheat free and Chef Andy was delighted to cook my sister an off menu dish with beautiful mushrooms. I had the yummiest warm beef salad and John had a burger without the bun. We were so well satisfied that John and I didn't eat again until well into the evening. We got ourselves a serve of plain Greek yoghurt each. John had canned apricots with his and I warmed through some frozen berries with a touch of honey.

How did I do?

Foodwise I did well. I don't think I had as many drinks as perhaps I should. I enjoyed today.

Breakfast:- Cheese omelet

Lunch:- Warm beef salad with lots of green stuff and just enough coriander to make it interesting.

Thoughts for the day..........

We enjoyed the drive. I had lots of thinking time. something new will be added in the next few day.

Left home just before 9 am as planned. Checked in at the Neurological Clinic with 30 seconds to spare. It was a good walk from the car park and we started out by getting confused about which level we were on. We tried several times to go up, then down in the elevator when all the time we had parked on the level we wanted. Haha! It was 5.45 pm when we arrived back home. I'm tired but the coffee is keeping me awake but at least I can relax now.

I have noticed a pattern of anxiety which sets in a week or so prior to these medical appointments. They almost paralyse me and as the day draws closer I do not sleep well. I know logically that the visit is more than likely routine and the more I try to control the anxiety with reason and suppression the worse it gets. I should learn to speak it out. Anxiety will lose it;s power once named and confessed.

The Neurological Registrar who saw me was quite thorough, asked lots of questions and I understood he said something about the basal ganglia being calcified but my research on that doesn't make sense so I'll forget about it because it's not a problem unless I get serious headaches or have other changes in movement or behaviour. Sounds weird and I think it is nothing that hasn't always been there. He was very negative about my chance of recovery from Bells Palsy. I'm glad I know that there is still plenty of time before I need consider the possibility of it becoming permanent. Plus I believe in the power of God to heal. He ordered another fasting blood, this time for their hospital records. And he admonished me because I will not take statins. I didn't argue but I have not changed my mind about them either.

How did I do?

I managed reasonably well. We need to find a different restaurant in Morrinsville.

Breakfast:- Smoothie

RAIN, BAKING AND PARCELS

OUR VIEW AFTER THE RAIN STOPPED

198 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE

2 DAYS OUT OF 31  EXERCISING

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS FOR 2012:- 24.5 kg/ 54 lbs

Thoughts for the day..........

I received an email from Jane in Bali. They were having a lazy day after almost no sleep on Saturday night.

The books I ordered from Amazon arrived today as did the Fat Head Movie. That was extremely fast service. I ordered on July 2nd and it looks as though it has all come from USA. That's only 2 weeks ago. I now have a hard copy of Wheat Belly, a recipe book by Dana Carpender and The Diet Cure by  The Wheat Belly book and the DVD were the ones I really wanted so I can share them with family.

I've had a good look through the recipe book and am now wondering how much I will use it. I would not have bought it off a shelf. I will pick out a recipe to try this week. Maybe I'll be surprised.

Tomorrow we are going to Hamilton so I can keep my appointment with a neurologist. I've begun to get used to having the twisted face of Bells Palsy but it really is ugly. Every now and then I get very impatient with myself when my speech isn't clear or I have trouble eating and drinking. I can't drink one handed because I need to hold the left side of my lips firm against the cup, glass or mug. We will have restaurant lunch and something easy for tea when we get home. It's such a nuisance to travel 3 hours each way to speak for a few minutes with a specialist. I don't expect him/her to tell me anything new, but then again I might be surprised.

Grocery shopping is planned for Wednesday after I get my hair shaped again. We have plenty of eggs so I was able to make my version of a frittata which turned out more like an egg bake.

I chopped up a couple of onions and cooked them in butter until transparent and soft. Then I cut up 2 rashers of bacon and cooked it up. I diced up some kumera, (sweet potato), and carrot and boiled them for a few minutes. I lightly tossed the onion, bacon, kumera and carrot together. I cracked 12 eggs into a bowl, found the old whirlygig hand beater and beat them up until fluffy. Then began the assembly.

I chose a baking dish and buttered it well then poured about half a cup of the beaten eggs into it. I covered the dish with about one and a half inches of the bacon and veggie mix and covered it with a good layer of baby spinach. Then came some additional flavour because I've found my eggy dishes to be quite bland if I don't spice them up a bit. I dotted the spinach with some sundried pesto and creamy blue cheese before gently pouring more egg over. I got a spoon to gently press any bits of spinach down under the egg. A good grind of pepper before topping it off with slices of tomato and grated tasty cheese to finish it.

I set my dish into a larger oven dish with a bit of water in it. The lot baked for around 45 minutes in a moderate oven. The top looked yummy and golden brown with melted cheese.

These eggy dishes are something I really like making and eating. They always taste yummy cold and make good picnic food. It suits me to make a big dish of this and be able to serve it over the next few days. Since we will be tired when we get home tomorrow it will be handy to have it in the fridge. It warms up nicely in the microwave too.

Reporting back............

It's raining again. Hoping for no rain tomorrow. It's a horrible drive in the wet.

How did I do?

I messed about this afternoon watching TV. Bad plan. I still need to shower and wash my hair. Note for Jenny. A few days ago she mentioned a website where I can buy some shampoo that might give my scalp a chance to heal. It's been really bad the last few days. Last night I got out of bed to take panadol, (paracetemol), so I could sleep.

I will call it a good day once I've made it through the shower.

Breakfast:- Smoothie

Lunch:- Soup and a flax bread sandwich filled with butter and mustard pickle.

THE BOSS TIMES TWO

LEXIE, (ALEXANDER ....)

KATIE, (KATERINA.....)

Both cats are registered pedigree Ragdolls. Lexie, is twice the size of Katie. It's normal for male Ragdolls to be 9 kg compared to 5 kg for females. Lexie is a little bit unusual in that he has a big fluffy ruff, in fact his fur is much longer than Katies, he has big baggy pants and from the front looks quite leonine especially in winter. Katie and Lexie are same age, 4 years and a three months, and Cattery mates but from different litters, One day , when we sell this house, we will have to re-home them. Jane and I will decide whose home is the most suitable. Jane has become very attached to them so my guess is she will chose her new home based on the needs of Katie and Lexie.

Thoughts for the day..........

I should swap my scales for the ones in this house. I have lost 4 kg overnight ..*giggles*

It's been a grey, misty day with some heavy rain and I have spent the day mooching and reading.

Hope it clears up tomorrow because we want to go home and get our gas heater to save using the inefficient electric heater here. I've always found this house cold, except in summer when it gets too hot upstairs. The living area has so many windows and glass French doors you could say it has 3 glass walls and it's not double glazing.

Reporting back............

I had a period this afternoon when I wanted something to pick at. It was quite an attack of the munchies. I found some dark chocolate sweetened with stevia that Jane had left in the pantry. I hope we can find it in the locals shops and replace it. I'm no longer hungry and am trying to stir myself to cook a couple of eggs before the effect of the chocolate wears off.

Thoughts for the day..........

Today is the day we move out to cat-sit. We got ourselves packed up but I was so slow we missed Jane so I never said goodbye in person. She left nearly an hour before we got to Mum's house. I meant to call or text her later in the afternoon when I knew she would be at the airport.

It was nearly 7 pm before I thought about it again and when I found my phone I had missed a heap of texts from her and she had boarded at 6.30 pm. I felt sick. Such a bad mother. I've sent a text to her cousins phone. Hopefully it works between here and Bali and she will get my apology when she lands. As I write Jane is four hours into a ten hour flight. I feel as though I let her down by not talking to her before she left. Once she arrives I'm hoping she will be too busy having fun to be worried about us.

Reporting back............

My sister was here, at Mum's house, when we arrived. It was good to catch up with her. I'd hoped to have some time with her but she left to go home after a couple of hours. Before she left she gave me a bottle of collodial silver she had made up. We're supposed to take it to protect us from radiation and follow her instructions to get our own kit for making it. She has many paranoid and crazy beliefs and one is that the whole world is going to experience a major radiation event. We've also been told to stock up on canned foods as one day there will be no safe food. Who puts all this weird stuff out for vulnerable people to get hooked up on?

How did I do?

My food has been OK. The scales here are a little different to my ones at home so they will only tell me whether I am losing or gaining based on my weight tomorrow.

Thoughts for the day..........

I bought a new laptop a few months ago after dropping and killing the one I was using. Fortunately our insurance came to the party and the only things I am sad about loosing are about six months worth of photos which I had neglected to back-up. I noticed there seemed to be a Kindle on this computer. I wasn't sure whether it was properly loaded so I ignored it until today. I've wanted to buy books from Amazon several times and the difference between the cost of buying a book and P & P to New Zealand compared with the a Kindle purchase finally won me over. I made a very modest purchase. I think it was less than $5.00 to buy The Smarter Science Of Slim Workbook by Jonathon Bailor. I'm glad that's all it cost because I doubt if I will ever use it but I wanted to know more about what is in his book. The good news is that it has given me confidence to buy other books for the Kindle.

Here's the link to Jonathon Bailor's Blog

One reason I have been reluctant to consider trying out the Kindle is the possibility of losing the Books if my computer crashes. I wonder if I can back up the Kindle to my external storage.

I also have a couple of books on PDF file that came from Destiny Publishing. I get the odd free book which I'm supposed to read and leave a review somewhere. I've not got around to reading any of the books until today when I read nearly a third of one of them. I like to read in bed before going to sleep. That doesn't work too well with the laptop. Another reason for neglecting to read these books is that I thought it would be too hard on my eyes but the PDF files are no strain at all.

Reporting back............

It's several days now since I last took my prescrition for acid reflux. Tonight I need one. My own fault. I've been eating freshly baked flax meal bread. It is low in carbs but I covered the slices in butter and raspberry jam. This is a blip. It seems that my gut really is beginning to heal after six months wheat free but I still need to be careful.

How did I do?

I'm still working out how any potassium tablets I need. It seems as though I need at least two a day at present. I still haven't done very much except prepare some food and eat and read.

Breakfast:- Smoothie

Lunch:- Lettuce and salami sandwich made with flax bread.
