Reporting Back ..........

 Tired. I didn't sleep all that well last night. Had a dream which was disconcerting. I wondered if it was trying to tell me I have areas which are still closed off because I'm embarrassed or frightened. Whatever it was I ended up reading for a time until I settled down. I don't take too much notice of dreams unless they disturb me greatly and if I don't get a revelation that makes sense I try to forget them. If it's important the subject will come up again.

Went over to Mum's this afternoon to see Jane, our daughter, while John did a few things in town. I opened my mouth about some of the stuff I've been learning about wheat. While she agrees I have some kind of allergy to wheat she thought some of my explanation was over the top. I will have to be careful talking to her. Maybe she will read the book Wheat Belly and have some Aha! moments. She too is very over weight and spending a fortune going to a counsellor/provider of food and supplements. To accept what I have learned would mean she has to change everything she thinks about weight loss.

And I left my camera behind. For the next few days I will have to find archived photos. I'm very annoyed with self as I planned to change my heading photo on the first day of each month using something current. I have my post all sorted and ready to go but not the photo I would have prepared.

120 DAYS MAINLY WHEAT FREE - 20 DAY OUT OF 30, CROSS-TRAINER OR WALKING


A WHEAT FIELD IS A BEAUTIFUL THING

I think this is the first time in my life I've been practically WHEAT-FREE
The science is compelling. 
My personal experience is compelling. 
For years I wondered what was poisoning me. 

The immediate health improvements are impressive.
I am able to exercise daily. 
I don't have crippling arthritic pain.
I have lost a significant amount of weight in 4 months.
I believe I'm eating healthier food.
Foggy brain is clearing. 
General motivation improving. 

Lassitude and depression are lifting off.
I always believed it was physical not psychological.


In spite of, 
a false stroke scare upsetting my routine, 
and two other extremely stressful events
continuing to affect me,
it has been easy to stay wheat free. 


This is not my first time low-carb.
Nor is it my first time ever sans bread.
Previous to this I never connected the dots to wheat.
Do I feel ripped off by lack of knowledge?
Indeed I do!

I do not have celiac disease
But wheat is poison to my system.

Now I know I'm not insane.
This knowledge could have saved me
and my family so much heart ache.
I can see a clear pattern.
I hope my children see my success.
I hope they follow in my footsteps.

I continue to persist toward my goals.
It may take a while.
40 years, maybe 73 of damage
is not undone in a hurry.

I hope to be a good example to others.
I hope I inspire you to look into this matter.

Unlike last month I haven't folded up in the latter part of the month. I haven't walked or used C/T every day but have averaged 2 out of 3 days doing something with another day to go. I only have 7 km to achieve my monthly distance so looking good right now.

I do think the C/T is easier to knock up the distance since according to the readout I go more than twice as fast as walking. It doesn't make a lot of difference to me. I'm getting fitter and stronger. At this stage I don't even care too much what is best for weight loss because the goal is to increase my stamina, fitness and general strength. All of this is happening. Whether or not a day comes when I want to optimise my exercise is still in my future.

There are some things that you know but don't know how to tell your doctor without being laughed out of the consulting room. Many years ago, when I had ME I read a few books about nutrition, can't remember who wrote them now as it was nearly 40 years ago. I put most of that stuff out of my mind as I became well again. 

I didn't want to live like a health nut, focussed on every piece of food that went in my mouth and worrying whether I was getting the correct nutrition and taking the right supplements day by day. I began to live by the philosophy that God gave us natural foods which would nurture our bodies properly if eaten sensibly. Trouble was I didn't know just how much mad scientists and greedy industrialists had invaded the food chain with their craziness.

I'm no Greenie but I do believe that we were given all we needed including brains to make improvements. It was never intended that some of our "improvements" would turn out to be destructive. That's a part of human nature we cannot ignore.

OK back to the point. What did I believe that I couldn't tell my doctor? I was fairly certain that my adrenal glands had taken a beating and they no longer functioned as well as they should. From that time I have taken extra, way extra vitamin B complex with high levels of calcium pantothenate, B5, because it helps improve stress levels.

I have just read this "wheat consumption leads to an abnormal high-adrenaline state," an old post on the Wheat Belly Blog and now I wish I liked scientific research. I guess I'll find the research to back this up somewhere but in the meantime it is another little piece of the jigsaw.

Oh and that Wheat Belly post is worth reading, especially the comments, for a good Belly Laugh.

How did I do?

Another quiet day at home and all boxes tucked except one. My weight has been stuck in the same place again for a week. I expected this place between 97 and 89 kg to test my patience, - doesn't make it any easier.

Slower today but I managed 40 minutes on cross-trainer = 8km. Improvement in stamina even on a low energy morning.

74.5/90 km for April.  Yay! 15.5 km in the next two days and I'll have met my km goal for April. I think I can do it.

Will need to start thinking about my goal for May. Maybe total km again but a challenge to do at least 60 minutes straight on at least 2 or more occasions. At some point in May I'm going to begin the stretch exercises in my Jenny Craig book. I did them many years ago and found them very good and of course, easily do-able for me. That will mean I am getting fitter, stronger, improving my stamina and flexibility. Has to be good. Right!

I hope all this fitness begins to overflow into my everyday activities soon.

I've been reading Wheat Belly Blog. Interesting. I think I might become permanently wheat free. It's been an eye-opener to read some of the personal stories and see how closely they mirror  mine. I've also been looking through this nutritionists blog which has lots of recipes I would use.

Another day spending hours researching health and low-carb sites. All I learned is that low carb can help reduce high blood pressure and a magnesium supplement might also be important. There's a magnesium calcium supplement in the cupboard. We find it helps prevent cramps. I haven't needed it for a very long time but I think I'll start taking it again. 

We watched Mum's health problems slowly escalate, starting with high blood pressure. Her high BP was probably brought on by stress initially. If stress could sink ships I have enough in my life to sink a battle ship. 

I am determined to do what I can not to follow in Mum's footsteps. There's nothing I can do about the things that cause the stress except for one. Having dodgy blood pressure is frightening me therefore I will do whatever it takes to bring it to a healthy level. 

I can control my diet. I can take a magnesium supplement. I can take my doctor's prescription hoping for the day when she can reduce my meds.  

I can work on my stress levels with God. 

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.

How did I do?

Missed eating dinner. Just snacked on a piece of cheese and a small piece of the Atkins bar I cut into yesterday. What with this slip up and not drinking enough it was only an OK day. 

I nearly said, 'Can do better!' Words that hurt and were said over me so many times I will not use them against myself. They always sound like criticism, condemnation, - horrible words.

I have some important things to do which I've been putting off so can't say I'm entirely happy with how I lived today. I really must stop procrastinating.

I prefer to say that while the day may have appeared to be unproductive, I know it has been valuable for what I learned. Aaaha! I feel so much better now.

Began the day with Bible reading, some aloud to exercise my speech. This is remarkable because I don't read my Bible very often. Not a healthy thing for a Christian but I lost the habit of prayer and Bible reading quite a few years ago. To me this is a sign of healing from the inside out.

 Still playing around setting up my new laptop. 

Completed reading Fat Head.

Washed some of Mum's jerseys. I think I'll keep these for me. One fits now the others are a little tight especially around my arms.

Made chicken broth/stock from the rotisserie chicken carcase. 

It's good to be feeling better.

Reporting Back ..........

Great day out except for Dr. visit which wasn't all bad. My apt was 10.15 but I had to wait ages. My BP was High yet I felt really good and had a bounce in my step I haven't had in ages. My Dr. was very accepting of it although I was shocked and disappointed. 180/100.  She gave me a smaller dose of one of my meds in spite of that ridiculous reading.

Two weeks ago it was 110/60, ridiculously low for me. I wish it wasn't an important indication for being at risk heart disease. I could forget completely about it and get on with what I know is working. The good news is that's exactly what my doctor told me to do. She was kind of surprised at my continuing weight loss but more astonished that the carotid artery ultrasound was Perfect. 

On record. My doctor told me something is Perfect. Haha!

We then stopped at Colenso Orchard, roadside Cafe, for lunch and had an absolutely delicious meal for $19 because the voucher took care of one meal.

In Thames I went to the Library and ordered Wheat Belly, then to the hospital where I changed the time of my CT scan to a friendlier, for us time. New apt. 10.45am 15th May.

At last we were free for the real reason for going to Thames, Noel Leeming to pick up our new laptop. Our insurance company replaced my laptop, which I'd dropped a few weeks ago. Well I didn't actually drop it. It fell off a sloping table I had it sitting on with a very nasty crash. That was my 6 month old Toshiba and I was very glad to have the really old, 6 years or more, Compaq, to use. Now I have another brand new Toshiba and it won't be going on any sloping table and John gets the old Compaq back until it finally stops going. No money spent except on new wireless mouse and extra thing with USB ports and a chill mat for my laptop. All at a huge discount, roughly 50%, so we scored there.

Next was Telecom and a free T-stick with a new 24 month contract. The contract wasn't as juicy as the first one which had just run out. I've had 4 GB with an extra 4GB free for the last 2 years. Now I only have 4 GB so will need to be careful that I don't overdo the videos. 

I was fading fast. Don't know whether it was the coffee with sugar I had at lunch or maybe I'd become dehydrated .... Whatever - I struggled my way around Pak 'n Save getting our groceries. We spent a fortune with the thought in mind that we wouldn't do more than top up on perishables for the next 3 weeks when we go to Thames again.

It was dark by the time we unloaded the car at home and I was soooo glad I'd bought a rotisserie chicken and had a big bowl of salad ready to go in the fridge. 

At Colenso a kind man at a neighbouring table saw me taking photos of our lunch and offered to take one of John and I together. I have archived it in the 'only to be seen after I have lost weight file.' I have so many truly awful photos but this one, taken on my sad side, takes a lot of beating. There's also a hairy problem. I've not been getting my hair done as often as it needs. Much, much worse than a bad hair day!

How did I do?

I think I did well for a long day out. 

I wish I didn't get so tired and have those awful "run out of steam" times but I've lived with them for a long time, so I can only hope that as I continue to eat well, stay wheat and sugar free most of the time that my strength, stamina and energy will improve.

I'm feeling a little frustrated because the scales are stuck again at 96kg, at least it's 1 kg down from last time. I think I have reached an old "set-point" and my body doesn't want to let go. This stubbornness will go on through the next 3 kg if I follow past history. 

The good news is that I can now manage 30 minutes in a session on the cross-trainer. I am missing my outside walks but sometimes I'm just too lazy to get dressed to go out. I can jump on the cross-trainer in my night clothes before showering and dressing. With the kind of weather we have, this is a good option and since the days are cooler I can go to the beach in the afternoon when I feel like it.

The other reason I find the cross-trainer convenient and more sensible is my eye. My left eyelid is paralysed and will not blink. I believe this is temporary but in the meantime bright sun and/or the slightest breeze cause the eye to dry and it can be very painful, not to mention the risk of causing permanent damage to the cornea.

Lunch:-    Hard Boiled eggs and salad with Paul Newman balsamic dressing. Tea

Dinner:-  Mince stew. 

Saute onions, add garlic, brown beef mince, in pan before adding diced veggies like carrots, kumera, celery, good spoonful of Tuscan seasoning, can chopped tomatoes and cook till veggies are soft. Add a bag of baby spinach add. Stir spinach in and when it has wilted to your satisfaction, Eat. The kumera means no thickening need be added.

I managed 30 minutes on the cross-trainer = 6.5 km

I am aiming to walk or cross-trainer 3 km or more each day this month.

Reporting Back ..........

We've booked a holiday house at Pauanui for the weekend of May 5th. Friends, Murray and Julie Snook, who pastor the church are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. We'll be celebrating our 50th next year but I think we're going to run away and go on a cruise.

We've just been watching on Shine, NZ Christian TV a Gaither Trio Homecoming on an Alaskan Cruise. I wonder if we can find the money to do something like that. How awesome would that be,

I think I could cope with a family celebration now. A few weeks ago I thought it would be impossible but I guess I'm healing from all the hurt. It still wouldn't be easy though. There would be those inevitable 'moments' through which I'd have to hide my real pain and wear a happy face.
